5 Supermarket claims that are NOT Healthy
Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Ryan Miller on 02-11-2011
Don’t let supermarket “diet friendly” claims fool you.
These so called healthy claims don’t always match up with the actual nutrition label.
The “healthy alternatives” aren’t necessarily wrong, they are just very misleading. And, these misleadings can cause you EXTRA pounds.
So here are 5 supermarket claims that are NOT healthy and you should try to avoid…
“No Sugar Added”
What this really means is that sugar itself isn’t added but fructose, sucrose, high fructose corn syrup and/or sugar alcohol is added in its place. And these are just as bad as added sugar(but with a harder name to pronounce).
Also, “No Sugar Added” could mean that artificial sweeteners were added instead and these are known to cause cancer.
Stick with WHOLE, NATURALLY occurring foods and you won’t have to worry about this or gain any unneccessary weight.
“Fat Free”
What this means is that the naturally occurring fat is replaced with added sugar. Remove one ingredient and replace it with something WORSE.
This added sugar will definitely add to your waistline.
Elevated blood sugar triggers a release of insulin that lowers your blood sugar but, signals the body to store fat.
Insulin does its job good, most times to good and causes your blood sugar to crash. That’s why you feel hungry very shortly after you’ve eaten a meal high in starches & sugars. It’s a vicious cycle that has you packing on the fat.
Remember fat is an ESSENTIAL nutrient your body needs. Stick with healthy sources of like fatty fish(wild salmon, sardines), avocados, coconut milk, nuts, seeds, beans and healthy condiments like guacamole & hummus. AVOIDÂ foods with hydrogenated vegetable oils & trans-fats.
“Whole Grain”
Many types of breads, cereals, pastas, bagels, etc claim to be ‘whole grain’ with clever marketing. In reality, the first ingredient in them is refined flour.
With refined flour, all the nutrients are processed out. This processed flour will shoot your blood sugar through the roof.
And like I said earlier, spiking your blood sugar will reak havoc around your waistline.
Try to avoid foods made with flour. Consider flourless products, made from organic sprouted grains & lentils, which provide more vitamins, minerals, fiber and contains a superior quality protein that closely parallels the protein found in eggs, containing all 9 essential amino acids.
“All Natural”
Watch for these claims because if it was “all natural” it wouldn’t come all packaged up in a box and, the ingredient list would include ONLY 1 ingredient instead of a page full.
Bottom line…
You are better off to eat naturally occurring foods that we were meant to eat, NOT the factory farming industry and marketing companies “super enhanced” versions.
Instead, avoid these “healthy” supermarket claims and stick with the 90% rule:
90% of the time eat lean cuts of free-range, grass fed meats, wild caught fatty fish, free-range/cage-free eggs, whole fruits & veggies, legumes, nuts, seeds and you’ll be well on your way to the body of your dreams.
