Interval Training – Why all the buzz?
Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Ryan Miller on 04-08-2011
What’s all this hype about “interval training”?
Can it really burn bodyfat as so many fitness pros claim?
It can, but not as good as all the fitness magazines claim it to be.
What is interval training?
Interval training involves bouts of high intensity work followed by bouts of low intensity work and you repeat that cycle for a given amount of sets.
An example may look like this on a treadmill:
5 minutes warm-up
1 minute 80-90% max heart rate
3 minutes 60% max heart rate
1 minute 80-90% max heart rate
3 minutes 60% max heart rate
1 minute 80-90% max heart rate
3 minutes 60% max heart rate
1 minute 80-90% max heart rate
3 minutes 60% max heart rate
1 minute 80-90% max heart rate
3 minutes 60% max heart rate
5 minutes cooldown
How effective is this?
You will burn off more bodyfat training this way as opposed to steady-state cardio(long, slow distance cardio).
But there is a far more efficient(and shorter) way to get the job done.
Why do cardio when you can interval train with resistance(bells, bands, med balls..etc) and burn fat/tone your body at the same time, all in the same workout?
Cardio is good for your heart and not very good at toning or shaping your body.
Resistance training is excellent for both!
My training system goes like this:
Superset/circuit style Resistance Training(20-25 min) followed immediatley by High Intensity Interval Training(8 min)
That’s it!
Now you’ve done your entire workout (resistance and cardio) in less time than cardio alone would take you.
And your results will come 3x faster because:
* Muscle is needed for toning and lean muscle tissue is built during short, intense bouts of exercise more quickly and efficiently
* Developing lean muscle tissue puts your metabolism into a fat burning state rather quickly
* High Intensity Interval cardio after resistance training cranks your fat burning furnace even higher and at the same time working the heart sufficiently.
The rest comes down to your eating habits.
